The Project

Interested in taking part?

Cashback: Connecting Through Creativity offers fun creative activities and art sessions to children and young people aged 10 to 25 in Aberdeen and Aberdeenshire. These sessions aim to explore and establish positive frameworks for relationships in their personal lives.

Encouraging children and young people to express their emotions can be challenging, but this project aims to increase their confidence, develop communication skills, build resilience, and encourage personal growth and independence. Participants will be supported to explore a range of issues, including trust, relationship building, emotional literacy, and positive ways to work through difficult feelings, using creativity and art.

The project will offer enjoyable, therapy-informed group and one-to-one engagements, facilitated by trained creative practitioners who will be flexible and responsive to individual needs while supporting young-person-led learning. They will organise a series of workshops tailored to each programme, culminating in an exhibition of the participants’ work or a celebration event planned by the children and young people involved.

Core to this project is the understanding that creativity is invaluable to working through the impacts of trauma, and that working together is key to building positive relationship skills.

In addition to supporting children and young people, the project offers support and guidance for parents and caregivers to engage in group and one-to-one sessions. These sessions aim to build their confidence and understanding while using art to strengthen their relationships with their children or young people.

Much of this project will be delivered through partnerships with other agencies, so if you are a professional working with young people in Aberdeen or Aberdeenshire and you think they might benefit from some sessions, please get in touch.

The Funders

CashBack: Connecting Through Creativity is funded by CashBack for Communities.

CashBack For Communities is a unique Scottish Government programme which reinvests criminal assets recovered through the Proceeds of Crime Act (POCA) and invests in projects delivering positive futures for our young people. The programme has strong links to the Scottish Government’s Vision for Justice in Scotland.

Since 2008, £130 million has been committed to community initiatives to improve the quality of life of young people right across Scotland. Over 2.5 million activities and opportunities for young people have been delivered so far.

Phase 6 of CashBack of Communities runs from 1 April 2023 to 31 March 2026 and will deliver a range of trauma-informed and person-centred services and activities for young people between the ages of 10-25 that:
Support young people most at risk of being involved in antisocial behaviour, offending or reoffending towards or into positive destinations.

Provide person-centred support for young people, parents and families impacted by Adverse Childhood Experiences and trauma.

Support young people to improve their health, mental health and wellbeing.

Support people, families and communities most affected by crime.

In Phase 6, a total of 29 CashBack Partner organisations will deliver activities including diversionary youth work and longer-term life-changing intervention projects – helping to turn young people’s lives around and provide them the opportunity of moving into employment, education or volunteering.
