Family Therapy
Family Therapy can help those in close relationships to better understand and support each other.
In Family Therapy we try to help everyone to feel safe so you can talk about difficult thoughts, feelings and challenges in order to gain a greater understanding of each other’s experiences and views. This can help to build on family strengths and support you to listen to, recognise and appreciate each other’s needs.
Avenue’s Family Therapist will help you to explore how everyone can work together to make useful changes in your relationships so that you can feel more confident and resilient as a family.
We are aware that everybody has a different understanding of what “family” can mean. We are happy for you to use a definition that suits you. Your “family” can include parents, children, adult children, siblings and grandparents. You may also wish to involve members of your wider family and important friends.
Sessions
Sessions are 50 minutes long and can be delivered face-to-face, by telephone or online. This may depend on where you live.
The membership of the Family Therapy sessions can change with some family member perhaps only joining for one or two sessions. It is also not unusual to include one or more individual sessions in Family Therapy. This can be discussed with your therapist.
How many sessions you will need will depend on your particular circumstances, but we typically start with the expectation that you will have 6 sessions. We can review this as the counselling progresses.
Cost
When you speak to our Service Administration team to arrange your sessions, they will ask you what donation you would like to make towards the cost of your Family Therapy.
Our suggested donation is £60 per session as this is what it costs us to deliver Family Therapy. There is no expectation for people on benefits or a low income to make a donation. However, please consider contributing what you can. We are a charity and we work hard to make sure that anyone who needs our support can access our services. Any donation you can make will help us to ensure that we can get help to the people who need it most.
Please be aware that we can only offer Family Therapy to people who live in Aberdeen, Aberdeenshire or Moray.
We are able to offer free and reduced cost counselling thanks to the support of a range of funders, including: National Lottery Awards for All, Aberdeen City Health and Social Care Partnership, Aberdeen City Common Good Fund, Aberdeenshire Council, Budge Foundation, Cattanach Trust, CNOOC International Community Fund, Moray Council and the Scottish Government.
